The DO's: Setting Yourself Up for Success
- DO Start with a Simulator: Before you ever plug in a real battery, spend a few hours in an FPV flight simulator to build muscle memory. We recommend VelociDrone or Liftoff.
- DO Learn the Regulations: Every pilot needs to be aware of the rules. If your drone weighs more than 0.55 lbs (250g), it must be registered with the FAA. Additionally, your drone must be equipped with a functional Remote ID system before its first flight. Always look at the official FAA website to stay up-to-date on the latest drone regulations and requirements.
- DO Practice at a Designated Field: We recommend honing your skills at a designated flying field in your city where you have plenty of room to practice without worrying about obstacles.
- DO Invest in Quality Goggles: Your goggles are your window to the sky. Look for a pair that fits comfortably and offers a clear image, as this is how you'll experience the adrenaline of flight firsthand.

The DON’Ts: Common Rookie Mistakes
- DON’T Update Firmware Immediately: Avoid updating the firmware on your Flight Controller (FC), ESC, goggles, or radio right out of the box. If you run into a problem on your first flight, it is much harder to determine if you are facing a hardware defect or a software configuration issue.
- DON’T Leave Your Drone Plugged In While Stationary: Never leave your drone powered on for long periods without flying. FPV drones rely on the airflow from flight to cool the Video Transmitter (VTX). Without that air, the VTX can overheat and suffer permanent damage.
- DON’T Ignore Your Altitude: To keep the skies safe, always stay under 400 feet in permitted areas and maintain a safe distance from airports, hospitals, national parks, and military bases.
- DON’T Guess the Zone: We strongly suggest downloading FAA-approved apps that show active fly zones and temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), so you always know where it is legal to take off.
- DON’T Fly Over People or Property: Never fly directly over crowds, individuals, vehicles, or private properties. If a rig goes down, it can cause serious injury or damage.
- DON’T Skimp on Soldering or Tools: Poor wiring and bad solder joints are the leading cause of "magic smoke." Invest in high-quality 60/40 solder wire, a temperature-controlled soldering iron, and a good set of metric tools to ensure your components stay secure and your hardware isn't stripped. - DON’T Neglect Your Batteries: Never leave LiPo batteries charging unattended, and always store them in a fire-retardant bag or metal container. To protect the lifespan of your battery, never keep flying past 3.5v per cell. If you have a battery that has dropped below its safe voltage and you are local, bring it to us for our LiPo Battery Recovery service rather than trying to force-charge it at home.
